5 Common Paint Color Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

1. Choosing Color in Isolation

We’ve all fallen in love with a color on Pinterest or in the paint store. But unless you’ve also fallen in love with your flooring, countertops, and cabinetry, it won’t matter.

Tip: Always evaluate paint in the context of your space’s fixed finishes—floors, tile, countertops, and architectural elements. Paint should support these elements, not compete with them.

2. Testing Too Many Swatches

More isn’t always better. I’ve seen walls look like patchwork quilts of indecision—10 samples, all overlapping.

Tip: Test 2–3 carefully selected swatches based on undertone compatibility, not just random favorites. Better yet, use large painted samples on white boards so your existing wall color doesn’t interfere.

3. Ignoring Undertones

That gray that looked clean in the store now looks purple on the wall? That’s undertones at play. Every neutral has a hidden color temperature—pink, green, blue, or violet—that reacts to lighting and surroundings.

Tip: Undertones can’t be avoided, but they can be understood. That’s part of what I do during a Color Mix™ consultation—read the undertones of your finishes and recommend colors that harmonize.

4. Overlooking Sheen & Finish

You finally pick the perfect white... and it looks all wrong when it dries. Often, the problem isn’t the color—it’s the finish.

Tip: Sheen affects reflection, saturation, and feel. Walls usually do best in eggshell or matte. Trim often sings in semi-gloss. The same color in two sheens can read completely differently.

5. Trying to Match the Neighbor’s House

It worked on their house... why does it look so bad on yours? Because every home has different lighting, exposures, landscaping, and fixed elements.

Tip: Your color story should reflect your home, your style, and your goals. Color is personal—your palette should be too.
